Summary

Composite materials are used in various engineering fields, but their use in civil engineering is relatively recent. Sandwich panels, made of glass fibre composite skins and a modified phenolic core, offer advantages over traditional materials like concrete and steel, including being lightweight, strong, water-resistant, and fire-resistant. An experimental investigation was conducted on the behaviour of fibre composite sandwich panels under uniformly distributed loading, varying fibre orientation and panel fixity with joists. The results showed that the stiffness of the sandwich is affected by the fibre orientation of the sandwich skins, but no major effect was observed for variation of fixity between slab and joist. The study aimed to provide knowledge on the behaviour of sandwich panels as flooring systems, which can be beneficial in reducing dead weight and overall load, resulting in smaller supporting members.
