The Research School of Biology at ANU issued its 145th newsletter in February 2023, announcing various achievements and updates. Alice Shin won the ANU Cryo-EM prize poster at the Lorne Protein 2023 conference. Several PhD students completed or submitted their theses, including Jesse Wallace, Yuzhen Fan, Yun Hsiao, Ayesha Akram, and Holly Beckett. New PhD students commenced, such as Jaylen Nicholson, Ciara Wallis, Alexandra Williams, and Sofia Bolcato. Emily Furlong joined the school as a lecturer and group leader, and Camila de Souza Barbosa visited from the University of Sao Paulo. The Dean, Kiaran Kirk, was awarded an Order of Australia, and Dr. Mareike Moeller received a Marie Skłodowska Curie global outgoing fellowship. Several staff members received Dean's Commendations for Excellence in Education, including Peter Solomon, Eloise Maher, Ben Corry, Eric Stone, and Daniel Noble. The newsletter also featured news on conservation efforts, science over summer, and media coverage of staff research, including Ryszard Maleszka, Ryan O'Donnell, Caitlin Byrt, and Damien Farine. A PhD spotlight highlighted Kate O'Hara's research on the Australian gecko Heteronotia binoei and its ability to survive without sex.
