Summary

K-shell x-ray sources at the Z Accelerator have been studied extensively, analyzing radiation and spectra from materials such as Al (5% Mg), stainless steel, and Cu (4% Ni) to understand dominant K-shell emission mechanisms. Recent work showed that K-shell emission is dominated by initial mass and plasma density in some cases, and by electron temperature in others. This work compares K-shell emission from primary materials (Al, Fe, Cu) and dopant materials (Mg, Cr, Ni) to evaluate opacity effects in z-pinch plasmas. Experimental data from pre-refurbished Z shows that opacity limits Al K-shell output but does not significantly limit Cu K-shell output, and similar observations will be presented for post-refurbished Z. Comparisons will be made with dominant plasma emission properties (mass, temperature, density) to understand the correlation with opacity.
