Kragten Design developed the VIRYA-2.8B4 windmill to pump water using a rope pump. The windmill has a 4-bladed rotor and a hinged side vane safety system. A transmission with a gear ratio of 2.5 bridges the distance between the rotor shaft and the vertical shaft. The rope pump has a horizontal axis, a spoke wheel with a rim made of car tires, and a nylon rope with pistons connected at 1m intervals. The pump is designed for low heads and has a relatively large gap between the piston and the inside diameter of the PVC pipe. The efficiency of the rope pump is determined by friction losses, hydraulic losses, and leaking flow. The friction losses in the bearings and between the rope and the rubber rim cause a friction torque, and the leaking flow depends on the pressure difference and the gap between the piston and the rising main. The volumetric efficiency of the rope pump has a direct influence on the pump efficiency.
