H2O contents of melt inclusions are 0.18-0.26 wt%, likely representing magmatic values. A global mafic magmatic event at 2.48-2.45 Ga may have caused intensification of hydrothermal activity, leading to BIF deposition and glaciation during the Paleoproterozoic. Estimated CO2 sequestration from BIF deposition could have triggered global cooling, and carbonates associated with BIFs show enrichment in light carbon, possibly due to mantle input or enhanced organic carbon burial.
