Eight species of Lactarius subsection Scrobiculati are recognized in NW Europe:
1. Lactarius scrobiculatus
2. Lactarius leonis
3. Lactarius olivinus
4. Lactarius tuomikoskii
5. Lactarius auriolla
6. Lactarius resimus
7. Lactarius aquizonatus
8. Lactarius citriolens

These species are characterized by their large to medium size, convex-depressed to infundibuliform pileus, yellow to white color, and slimy texture. The stipe is rather short, scrobiculate or not, and dry. Macrocystidia are abundant to nearly absent, and the pileus cuticle is a fairly thick ixocutis. The latex is white, rapidly turning sulphur yellow when exposed, and acrid.

The species can be distinguished by characteristics such as:
- Pileus color and zonation
- Stipe spotting
- Macrocystidia abundance and size
- Spore shape and size
- Pileus margin and surface features
- Habitat and association with tree species, particularly Picea abies.
