Summary

Lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) is a primitive fish with a torpedo-shaped body, bony plates, and a long, tapering snout. It has no teeth and feeds on small organisms like snails, insect larvae, and leeches by suction. Lake sturgeon are found in the drainage basins of the Mississippi River, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior, and are listed as a rare species in the US. They migrate to shallow, rocky areas to spawn between late April and early June, and can live for many years. Wisconsin has good, naturally reproducing lake sturgeon populations in several river systems, and the species has a watch status in the state.
