The article discusses a method for assessing the ecological and economic balance (EEB) of the catchment area of the Cimla River. The study area is located in the steppes of the Volgograd and Rostov regions and is subject to anthropogenic pressure (AP) due to intensive land use. The EEB assessment is crucial to determine the balance of disturbed and undisturbed lands.

The assessment was conducted using remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS). The categories of lands in the catchment area were determined using space images, and their current state was evaluated. The GIS program ArcGIS Pro was used to calculate the ratio of each land category to the catchment area.

The results show that 93% of the lands are used for agricultural purposes, including arable land, livestock farms, and protective forest belts. The land categories were divided into two groups: anthropogenic and natural. The anthropogenic group includes lands used for transportation, settlements, and agriculture, while the natural group includes protected areas, forests, and water bodies.

The EEB assessment was conducted in two stages: development of cartographic materials and evaluation of the EEB using the obtained data. The cartographic materials were developed using ArcGIS Pro, and the EEB was evaluated based on the characteristics of the land categories, including the area of each category, intensity of agricultural land use, and degree of natural protection.

The study highlights the importance of assessing the EEB of the catchment area to ensure sustainable development and minimize negative environmental impacts. The results can be used to develop strategies for sustainable land use and management of the catchment area.
