Summary

MSMA (Mono Sodium Methane Arsonate) is an older postemergent herbicide used for weed control in turf, primarily for dallisgrass, crabgrass, sedges, and other hard-to-control weeds. Due to potential exposure to arsenic through drinking water, the EPA has implemented restrictions, including limiting use in vulnerable areas, buffer zones, and application limits. MSMA is allowed on golf courses, sod farms, and highway rights of way until December 31, 2013, with possible continuation if no health concerns are found. Alternative herbicides, such as Acclaim, Certainty, Dismiss, Drive XLR8, Monument, Revolver, and Sedgehammer, may be used, but consideration of turf species, weed spectrum, and rotational plans is necessary to prevent resistance.
