Summary

Bowhead whales spend late spring, summer, and early autumn in the Beaufort Sea, migrating northward in April and returning southward in September and October. They feed intensively during summer and autumn, with large aggregations seen nearshore east of Point Barrow in September. The stomach contents of five bowhead whales taken near Barter Island, Alaska, in autumn 1979 were examined, revealing that all five whales were feeding at the time of death. Copepods, particularly Calanus hyperboreus, were the dominant food item in three of the samples, while euphausiids, primarily Thysanoessa raschii, were dominant in one sample. Other prey items included mysids, hyperiid amphipods, gammarid amphipods, and fish. The overall mean percent composition of stomach contents was 59.8% copepods, 37.2% euphausiids, and smaller percentages of other prey types.
