Summary

Sheep treated for gastro-intestinal roundworms and returned to the same paddock can be rapidly re-infected, making drenches less effective. Moving sheep to low-worm risk pastures after drenching prolongs the interval between drenches and increases productivity. Low-worm risk pastures are not worm-free but have low enough levels to not limit productivity or cause disease. Several methods can prepare low-worm risk pastures, including freshly sown pastures, cropping, rotational grazing with cattle, 'Smart Grazing', hay or silage production, and spelling. These methods can be used by all sheep producers, regardless of property size or enterprise type. Planning and preparing low-worm risk pastures can be challenging but rewarding, with benefits larger than chemical drenches alone.
