Summary

Scenic Valley Farms in Rosemount, Minnesota, used high tunnels to monitor the presence of spotted wing drosophila (SWD) in 2014. Erik Gundacker, who helps manage the high tunnels, applied for an NCR-SARE Farmer Rancher grant to study the pest's impact on their organic crops. Gundacker installed insect netting on the high tunnel greenhouses and over field-grown strawberries to prevent SWD population build-up. Once SWD were detected, he applied organically-approved insecticides, ensuring pollinators had left the area before treatment. The netting, manufactured by ProtekNet, had a mesh size of 1.00 mm X.60 mm, allowing for 80% natural airflow while restricting SWD entry. Traps within the tunnels showed no SWD presence until late July. Gundacker used a combination of high tunnels, insect netting, and organically-approved insecticides to control the pest, reducing SWD populations to acceptable levels. He credits the insect netting as the primary reason for controlling the SWD outbreak, preventing new adults from entering the tunnel and reducing labor and material costs.
