Manuka oil, derived from the Leptospermum scoparium plant, contains natural β-triketones, including leptospermone, which has been found to have herbicidal properties. Leptospermone was first identified in 1977 as the active component in bottlebrush plant extracts that caused bleaching of grass weeds. It inhibits the enzyme p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD), which is involved in the biosynthesis of prenyl quinones and tocopherols, leading to bleaching of newly emerging tissues. Manuka oil has been shown to be active against large crabgrass when applied to foliage or soil, with leptospermone remaining active in soil for at least two weeks. The biosynthesis of leptospermone is not fully understood, but a hypothetical pathway has been proposed involving a type III polyketide synthase (PKS) and a C-methyltransferase (CMT).
