Inverse methods identify material parameters by comparing experimental observations with numerical simulations, with the goal of tuning material parameters in a single experimental setup. A stress-based strategy is proposed to identify non-elastic material parameters, using a simulated experiment to illustrate the principle of the method. The strategy involves an iterative process of updating the material elasto-plastic behavior until it converges to a final form, from which material parameters can be extracted. The method is based on the concept that the elasto-plastic material behavior can be described by the strain-stress hardening curve, and involves measuring the strain field, computing the stress field, and composing an intermediate strain-stress curve. The process is repeated until convergence is achieved, allowing for the identification of non-elastic material parameters.
