Melittin, a 26 amino acid protein in bee venom, was found to restore proteasome function in an animal model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In a study using hSOD1G93A mice, melittin treatment improved motor function, reduced neuron death, and decreased neuroinflammation. Melittin also reduced α-synuclein misfolding and restored proteasomal activity in the brainstem and spinal cord. The results suggest a potential link between melittin and the inhibition of neuroinflammation in ALS, with implications for the treatment of ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases.
