Summary

The Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) region is becoming increasingly exploited, and an effective disposal strategy for satellites at end-of-life is needed to prevent damage to operational satellites. Disposal into well-separated storage zones above operational orbits can limit collision risk, while disposal into eccentric orbits reduces collision risk and the lifetime of disposed satellites, freeing the orbital environment. The long-term evolution of MEO orbits is affected by luni-solar resonances, which cause an increase in eccentricity that can lead to dangerous crossings of operational orbits. The eccentricity growth is dependent on the satellite's orbital inclination, with peaks corresponding to inclination-dependent resonances. Different disposal strategies can mitigate these effects, and simulations show that disposal into storage zones or eccentric orbits can effectively reduce collision risk for long time spans, such as 200 years.
