Summary

The thermal management system (TMS) of low-temperature fuel cells in electric aircraft is challenging due to high excess heat energy at low temperatures. Metal hydride (MH) reactors can enhance the TMS by absorbing heat from the fuel cell or operating as a heat pump to enlarge the temperature difference in the heat transfer fluid cycle. Two operation concepts are considered: the MH reactor as a heat sink and as a heat pump. For both modes, a sizing of the MH reactor and heat exchanger is performed to estimate the impact on the TMS. The study shows that MH reactors can reduce the size of the heat exchanger significantly, with a reduction of up to 8% in quasi-continuous heat pump operation and 39% when the MH reactor operates as a heat sink. The results are applicable to general aviation, commuter, and regional aviation aircraft.
