Summary

Hexactinellid sponges host distinct microbiota, with Vazella pourtalesii having a higher microbial abundance and novel bacteriosyncytia, whereas Schaudinnia rosea has a low abundance of extracellular microbes. The microbiome of V. pourtalesii has genes for nitrogen cycling, including nitrification, denitrification, and nitrogen fixation, allowing the sponge to withstand low-oxygen conditions. The sponge's microbial farming demands ammonium, which is partially obtained from the seawater, potentially impairing the development of free-living bacterioplankton and other sponge species. The sponge aggregations affect the surrounding environment through the release of nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate, and their metabolic integration is delicate and dependent on the correct functioning of the microbial engine.
