This study investigates citation patterns in research projects from Civil and Mechanical Engineering programs at Landmark University, Nigeria, over three years (2016-2018). Using a bibliometric approach, researchers analyzed the references within the projects to understand:

1. Information Sources: The types of materials cited, focusing on journal articles, books, internet resources, etc.
2. Citation Comparison: Average citation counts per project between Civil and Mechanical Engineering.
3. Similarities & Variations: Similarities and differences in citation patterns between the two programs.

Key Findings:

- High Citations: Both programs demonstrated high citation rates. Civil Engineering projects had slightly higher average citations than Mechanical Engineering ones.
- Recent Materials: Most cited documents were very recent across both disciplines, indicating a focus on current research.
- Source Types: Journal articles were the most cited materials, followed by books. Mechanical Engineering students cited more books and internet resources than their Civil Engineering counterparts. Conversely, Civil Engineering students cited more multiple-authored materials.

Conclusions & Recommendations:

The study highlights the importance of understanding citation patterns for information literacy and academic research guidance. It recommends:

- Encouraging students to access diverse information sources beyond journals.
- Promoting awareness of reliable online resources alongside traditional print materials.
- Tailoring library support to meet specific needs of each engineering program based on their distinct citation patterns.
