Summary

Mielichhoferia species in the British Isles have been subject to taxonomic confusion, with M. elongata and M. mielichhoferiana being difficult to distinguish due to morphological similarities and possible hybridization. Molecular studies by Shaw (1994) confirmed the two species as genetically distinct, but British material was not included. Prior to this, many authors had lumped the species under M. mielichhoferiana, which was given protected status under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. However, the presence of M. mielichhoferiana in Britain has been doubted, and it has not been seen since 1971. Surveys have confirmed the presence of M. elongata at Coire Kander, but not M. mielichhoferiana. Morphological differences between the two species include leaf shape, nerve structure, and rhizoid papillosity, which can be used to consistently separate them. Re-examination of historical specimens has led to the conclusion that some previously identified as M. mielichhoferiana are actually M. elongata or hybrids.
