Summary

Researchers developed low-cost, green technologies to remediate acid mine drainage (AMD) and impacted soil, using drinking water treatment residuals (WTR) and hyper-accumulator plants. The study found that WTR amendments reduced metal leachability and soil erosion, while hyper-accumulator plants like Vetiver and Pokeweed showed promise in phytoremediation. Batch sorption studies removed up to 99.85% of iron and 95.5% of zinc from AMD water, and soil acidity was increased to near neutral levels. The technologies showed potential for passive treatment of AMD and impacted soil at low cost and with environmental sustainability.
