Summary

Fluorescent molecular rotors' fluorescence intensity increases with solvent viscosity, with single-bond and double-bond rotations proposed as nonradiative decay pathways. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence measurements, combined with visible-pump/mid-IR probe transient measurements and TD-DFT calculations, show that both single and double bond rotations are involved in DCDHF rotors' decay, with fluorescence quenched by rotation around the dicyanomethylene double bond in non-polar solvents and by rotation about a single bond in polar environments, leading to a dark internal charge-transfer state.
