Summary

Moose-vehicle collisions are a major issue in Alaska, with the Matanuska-Susitna Valley reporting nearly one-third of statewide collisions. From 2016 to 2018, data were collected at 333 collision sites to compare landscape and habitat metrics. Sixty moose were fitted with GPS radio-transmitters to track movement patterns. The study aims to develop recommendations to mitigate collision risks and moose mortalities. Wildlife-vehicle collisions pose a threat to both motorists and wildlife, with moose being the primary species involved in Alaska. Between 2000 and 2012, 9,949 moose-vehicle collisions occurred, resulting in 23 human fatalities and thousands of moose mortalities. The study seeks to inform efforts to minimize collision risks by collecting site-specific information and understanding seasonal moose movement patterns.
