Summary

Researchers investigated how the density of adhesive ligands affects platelet adhesion and spreading on surfaces. They found that platelets adhere and spread on surfaces with ligand spacing of 30-60 nm, but not on surfaces with spacing of 80-100 nm. However, increasing the spacing to 120 nm resulted in platelet binding, but the platelets remained discoid and did not spread. The study suggests that the extension of filopodia and platelet spreading depend on different ligand densities, with filopodia extension occurring on surfaces with ligand spacing of 100 nm or less, and sustainable adhesion and spreading requiring lower ligand-to-ligand spacing (≤60 nm).
