The European Patent Office, US National Nanotechnology Initiative, and International Standard Organization have similar definitions, emphasizing characteristics such as focus on nanometer-scale materials or processes, control and manipulation at this scale, and commercialization. Nanotechnology has developed from a research field to a promising technology with high impact on physics, chemistry, and biology, and is forecasted to reach a global market of USD 150-3,100 billion. China and Germany are compared in terms of nanotechnology patenting, with China showing an above-average growth rate and Germany a below-average one. Major differences are found in the role of universities and research institutes, as well as international patenting strategies. The article aims to provide an overview of patent landscapes in nanotechnology in China and Germany, focusing on historical trends, importance of private enterprises and universities, and major fields of patenting.
