Summary

Norfloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, was tested for its effects on early stages of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) in a subchronic toxicity test. The test exposed fertilized embryos to norfloxacin concentrations of 0.0001, 0.1, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0 mg.L–1 for 34 days. Results showed significant stimulation of development in all experimental groups, with increased total body length in the 10.0 mg.L–1 group. Oxidative stress parameters were also affected, with increased activity of glutathione S-transferase in the 0.1, 1.0, and 5.0 mg.L–1 groups, and decreased activity of glutathione peroxidase in the 10.0 mg.L–1 group. Lipid peroxidation was decreased in the 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0 mg.L–1 groups. The study concludes that norfloxacin has a negative impact on biochemical processes related to reactive oxygen species production in early-life stages of common carp.
