Summary

Normal stresses in semiflexible polymer hydrogels, such as fibrin and collagen networks, exhibit anomalous behavior, developing tensile axial stress when subject to torsion, opposite to the classical Poynting effect observed in most elastic solids, including synthetic polymer gels. A microscopic model predicts the magnitude of stress components depends inversely on the characteristic strain for the onset of nonlinear shear stress, confirmed experimentally by shear rheometry on fibrin gels, and also predicts a transient behavior of the normal stress, in agreement with measured time-dependent normal stress.
