Nuclear power generates about one-fifth of the electricity used in the US, making it the second-largest source of electricity generation. The advantages of nuclear power include:

However, there are also significant liabilities:
- High construction costs: $2 billion for a 1,000-megawatt plant
- Long construction time: 5 years
- Safety concerns: risk of accidents and theft of spent fuel
- Economic challenges: "all-in" costs of 6.7 cents/kWh, compared to 4.2 cents/kWh for coal and 4-5.6 cents/kWh for natural gas.

Despite these challenges, some environmental advocates are reevaluating nuclear power as a viable option, and there is talk of beginning construction on new nuclear power plants in the US for the first time since the 1970s. The US government may need to provide assistance to overcome the "first-of-a-kind" costs and make nuclear power more competitive.
