Summary

The Hay Marketing Task Force proposed quality standards for legume, grass, or grass-legume hay, including crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and estimates of digestible dry matter (DOM) and dry matter intake (DMI). The Relative Feed Value (RFV) index is calculated from DOM and DMI. 'Alfagraze' alfalfa was harvested at 10% bloom six times with three rates of boron, and the results showed that boron had no effect on fiber constituents, while harvest date significantly affected fiber components and CP. The RFV index was highest in July at 182, classified as Prime. Alfalfa harvested from bud to 10% bloom during summer has the potential for a high RFV index.
