Summary

Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) have difficulty performing and learning motor skills, and research suggests that the mirror neuron system (MNS) may be impaired in DCD. The MNS is a neural network that contributes to imitation and learning new behaviors through observation. A study used electroencephalography (EEG) to measure MNS activation during action observation in children with DCD and typically developing children. The results showed that children with DCD had lower levels of mu suppression and reduced modulation of coherence during an observational learning task, indicating altered MNS activity in DCD. These findings support the hypothesis that MNS dysfunction may contribute to the motor difficulties seen in DCD.
