Summary

Researchers analyzed surface elevation records from two locations in the northeast Pacific to examine rogue waves and their relationship to wave groups, finding 300 individual rogue waves with heights greater than 2.2 times the significant wave height in over 2 million wave groups. Contrary to recent nonlinear modeling results, rogue waves were not found to occur at the front of wave groups, but rather tend to be located in the center of the group, with a height ratio to neighboring crests greater than in average wave groups. Steep waves, which are not necessarily large, tend to be at the front of wave groups. The study suggests that random superposition of nonlinear waves is sufficient to explain the observations of individual rogue waves.
