Scientists are frustrated with the slow response to science by policy and industry, and are inspired by youth movements on climate and biodiversity crises, but unsure how to effect positive change. Ocean Literacy (OL) has evolved into a framework for social and cultural transformation, and can help close the gap between science and transformative change. The People Ocean Planet (POP) initiative uses behavioural insights and diverse collaborations to accelerate climate action and sustainability, and seeks to empower scientists to reach beyond their comfort zones and tackle human dimensions of ocean challenges. Behavioural change refers to tangible change in individual or group choices, and encompasses shifts in awareness, values, attitudes, and intentions. The POP initiative conceptualizes the need to MOTIVATE, SOCIALIZE, and EASE the change, and collaborates with diverse organizations and individuals to boost the social and cultural impact of research and outreach activities.
