Summary

This doctoral thesis explores the molecular understanding of morphology formation in organic solar cells, focusing on the correlation between the active layer's morphology and device performance. Using Hansen solubility parameters and solution chemistry, the research investigates the thermodynamics of phase separation in conjugated polymers, both in solution and thin films. Microgravity conditions were used to study the early stages of phase separation, and atomic force microscopy combined with infrared spectroscopy characterized the morphology of the dry film. The results show that understanding solvent-solute and solute-solute interactions is key to comprehending morphology formation, and Hansen solubility parameters prove to be a valuable tool for initial screening of alternative solvents and solvent blends for more environmentally friendly processing and upscaling.
