After a "dark age" of Shropshire fungus interest, the British Mycological Society appointed Dr. Jack Marriott to set up a national fungus groups network in 1992. Tom and Shirley Preece returned to Shropshire in 1989 and sparked interest in fungi, leading to the formation of the Shropshire Fungus Group with founding members including Roy Mantle, Dr. Tom Preece, and Dr. Sylvia Kingsbury. The group's early goals included creating a Shropshire Fungus Checklist, which was first published in 1997.
