Industry statistics show that 87.9% of US operations have kids with horns, and the average age for horn removal is 16.3 days, which exceeds the recommended age for disbudding. The most popular method for disbudding is using an electric dehorner (hot iron), but pain mitigation is important, and methods like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), local anesthetics, and topical anesthetics can be used. Only 30% of US operations provide analgesics or anesthetics during disbudding, and research recommends using a long-lasting NSAID with a local anesthetic for effective pain management.
