Parashat Acharei Mot-Kedoshim (5783/2023)

This parsha, named "Acharei Mot" (After the Death), emphasizes the sanctity and value of life. The verse "VaChai Bahem" (and he shall live in them) signifies that Mitzvot are given to sustain life, not to cause death. In situations where saving a life conflicts with observing Shabbat, preserving life takes precedence.

The Gemara Yoma teaches that even minimal chances of saving a life require ignoring Shabbat laws. This is illustrated by the example of clearing rubble on Shabbat to rescue someone trapped under a collapsed building. The Mishna emphasizes the value of every moment of life.

Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik permitted sending telegrams for prayer and calling for help on Shabbat, even in uncertain situations, as hesitating could be fatal. This is based on the commandment "Lo Ta'amod Al Dam Re'icha Ani Hashem" (You shall not stand aside while your fellow's blood is shed).

The parshiot follow Yom HaShoah VeHagvurah, prompting reflection on the actions of ourselves and our ancestors during the Holocaust.
