Summary

Researchers developed consensus-based sediment effect concentrations (SECS) for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by compiling and classifying published sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) into three categories: threshold effect concentrations (TECs), midrange effect concentrations (MECs), and extreme effect concentrations (EECs). The geometric mean was used to calculate the consensus-based SECs, which were then evaluated for their predictive ability using sediment chemistry and biological effects data from various locations in the United States. The results showed that the consensus-based SECs can be used to predict sediment toxicity and that they reflect causal rather than correlative effects.
