Summary

A Mott-type approach is applied to predict fragmentation of expanding structures, considering potential failure points driven by instability analysis. Fragmentation is preceded by localization of plastic deformation in multiple necks, predicted by combining periodic unstable eigenmodes. Obscuration conditions, linked to unloading wave propagation, yield a fragment distribution. The approach is developed for an expanding ring experiment, justifying fragment size scatter and showing that unloading waves must propagate at a celerity much lower than the elastic wave speed.
