Summary

A 3D explicit finite element code is developed for simulating high velocity impact and fragmentation events, utilizing a rate sensitive microplane material model that accounts for large deformations and rate effects. The code is used to simulate high velocity projectile impact on plain concrete slabs, and the results are compared with experimental data, showing realistic predictions of failure mode and exit velocities. The importance of parameters such as contact friction, rate sensitivity, bulk viscosity, and deletion criteria is also addressed.
