Summary

Researchers studied the nucleus 14B using the 13B(d,p)14B and 15C(d,3He)14B reactions to determine the effective single-particle energies (ESPE) of sd-shell neutron orbitals. The reactions provided complementary information about the negative-parity 1s1/2 and 0d5/2 neutron single-particle states in 14B. The data from the (d,p) reaction gave neutron-spectroscopic strengths, while the (d,3He) results confirmed the existence of a broad 2- excited state. The results estimated the sd-shell neutron ESPE in 14B, which are crucial for nuclear-structure calculations. The study aimed to track the evolution of the 1s1/2 and 0d5/2 ESPE in 14B, the lightest bound N=9 isotone, to understand how these energies change as a function of N/Z, especially at the limits of nuclear stability.
