Summary

This study investigates the dynamic and quasi-static shear strength of AlSi10Mg alloy fabricated using selective laser melting (SLM). The results show that the static shear strength is independent of build direction, while the dynamic shear strength of vertically built samples is 11% higher than that of horizontally built samples. The dynamic shear tests were performed using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) with a novel punch assembly that generates pure dynamic shear loads on the sample. The study also found that the shear strength dependency on build orientation can be explained by a mechanism based on electron microscope fractography.
