Summary

A mode II mechanical characterization of adhesive joints was performed using a Split Hopkinson Tensile Bar with a temperature chamber. The experimentally obtained traction-separation curves were used to develop a Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) that represents the strain-rate and temperature-dependent mechanical response of the adhesive joints. The model was validated using End Notch Flexure (ENF) multi-material specimens tested at different temperatures, and finite element simulations showed the model's ability to accurately predict the adhesive joints' failure. The adhesive showed a clear temperature dependency, with a decrease in strength and an increase in fracture energy at higher temperatures. The CZM takes into account the adhesive thickness and void volume fraction variation, and includes rate-dependent coefficients and material constants fitted from experimental data. The model was able to capture the complex behavior of the adhesive joints under different loading conditions and temperatures.
