Summary

Researchers present a novel spectroscopic method called Correlated Rotational Alignment Spectroscopy (CRASY) for analyzing molecular mass, rotational structure, and electronic structure. CRASY uses a multi-pulse technique to excite a rotational wave packet in molecules, which is then probed by a delayed laser pulse, allowing for the correlated measurement of rotational structure, molecular mass, and electron binding energy. The method is demonstrated on carbon disulfide and butadiene, and shows high sensitivity and selectivity, enabling the assignment of rotational constants for low-abundance compounds and the investigation of fragmentation channels. CRASY can be applied to heterogeneous samples and offers new possibilities for determining rotational spectra, electronic structure, and photochemical dynamics for complex molecules and clusters.
