Summary

A novel experimental method, Pre-Stressed Punch-Through-Shear (PS-PTS), is proposed to characterize the shear strength of concrete. The method involves pre-stressing a metallic ring, inserting a concrete sample, and then applying a relative displacement to shear the ligament. This technique allows for better control of the confining level and can be used to investigate the shear strength of concrete as a function of confining pressure. The results are compared to those obtained with the previous oedo-PTS testing method, which suffered from limitations such as changing confinement levels during testing. The PS-PTS test can be performed under static and dynamic conditions, allowing for the determination of the shear response of concrete over a wide range of strain-rates.
