Summary

Experimental stress analysis was conducted on motorbike handlebar clamped joints to investigate stress trends in the elastic and plastic fields. The clamp consists of two parts, and the assembly procedure involves tightening screws in a specific sequence. The study aimed to determine stress trends during screw tightening, non-symmetric effects in stress distribution, and the safety of disassembling and reassembling the clamp. Finite element method (FEM) analysis and experimental tests were performed on two types of couplings, with different materials and characteristics for the handlebar. The results showed that there are no significant differences in induced stress distributions between two tightening procedures, and the FEM model was calibrated and validated. Tests with standard nominal tightening torque revealed plasticization with residual strains, and a stick-slip phenomenon was observed for type II coupling. The safety of coupling assembling and disassembling was studied, and the results showed that the stress-strain cycle remains totally in the elastic field, with no hysteresis, when the clamp is opened and closed again.
