Summary

Researchers from CEA and VINCI conducted a feasibility study on photon activation and neutron activation techniques for fast soil characterization. They used a linear electron accelerator (linac) to generate high-energy photons and neutrons, which activated atomic nuclides in soil samples. The activated nuclides emitted gamma-rays, which were detected using gamma-ray spectrometry. The study aimed to assess the potential of these techniques for soil analysis and tested them on samples from three construction sites. The results showed that photon activation at 9 MeV can identify radioactive nuclei such as 56Fe and 28Si, while neutron activation can detect elements like titanium, manganese, magnesium, sodium, vanadium, and aluminum.
