Summary

D.M. Olson and P.S. Ward studied the ant fauna of Kirindy Forest in western Madagascar, collecting 86 species, with an additional 5 species known from the vicinity of Morondava. The forest is exceptionally species-rich for the ant subfamily Cerapachyinae, with 9 species recorded, and the arboreal genus Tetraponera, with 10 species. Most of the ant species (79 out of 86) are endemic to Madagascar. The ant fauna is almost entirely composed of endemic Malagasy species, with only one "tramp" species recorded. The study suggests that the absence of certain competitive ant taxa in Madagascar may have permitted the diversification of Cerapachyinae and Tetraponera.
