Summary

Researchers compared visual cortex activation by negative and neutral complex scenes in 40 patients with unilateral temporal lobe resection (TLR) and 20 healthy controls. The results showed preserved hemodynamic emotion modulation of visual cortex in right TLR patients and subtle reductions in left TLR patients. Right TLR patients had decreased visual cortex activation regardless of picture content, while healthy controls showed small emotional modulation of the left amygdala and equal activation of the right amygdala by negative and neutral pictures. The findings suggest laterality differences in emotion-specificity and support the notion of reentrant mechanisms between the amygdala and visual cortex, with the right medial temporal lobe influencing visual processing in general and the left medial temporal lobe contributing to emotion processing.
