Summary

Researchers evaluated the protective effects of hypothermia on ischemic injury to the hippocampus in gerbils. Hypothermic treatment was applied during a 5-minute carotid artery occlusion, and the animals' functional outcomes were assessed using open field tests of spatial memory and measurements of evoked potentials from area CA1 in hippocampal slices. The results showed that intraischemic hypothermia provided virtually complete protection against cerebral ischemia, with treated animals performing as well as sham-operated controls in spatial memory tasks and having normal electrophysiological function and histological appearance. In contrast, ischemia at normothermia resulted in significant deficits in open field behavior, diminished field potentials, and near-total loss of pyramidal cells in dorsal CA1. The study suggests that combining behavioral, electrophysiological, and histological measures provides a powerful method for assessing outcome following cerebral ischemia.
