Summary

Researchers found that in budding yeast, a GAL1 reporter gene can interact with its homologous allele and influence its activity during galactose induction. They created two reporter genes, one with a wild-type GAL1 promoter (WT GAL1pr) and the other with a mutant promoter (Δ1pr), and inserted them either as a single copy or as alleles into a chromosome location. The results showed that the WT GAL1pr can accelerate the activation of the defective Δ1pr without affecting its steady-state expression level, but only when the two reporters are located at allelic sites. The interaction and transregulation require the activator Gal4 and fully activated WT GAL1pr transcription. This study reveals the existence of interallelic gene regulation in yeast, which contributes to the understanding of long-distance gene regulation in this system.
